Deep tissue massage is for the tension that a relaxing massage doesn't reach: the knot between the shoulder blades from months at a desk, the tight lower back, the calves and hamstrings that never quite recover between workouts. The therapist works slowly, using forearms, elbows and focused finger pressure to reach deeper muscle layers and the connective tissue around them.

This is a working massage rather than a purely relaxing one. Expect the therapist to spend real time on problem areas, to check in about pressure — the useful level is "satisfying discomfort", never sharp pain — and to leave some areas feeling worked the next day, similar to a good gym session.

What to expect

Sessions begin with warming strokes before the deeper work starts; going deep on cold muscle is counterproductive, so the pace builds gradually. Communicate honestly about pressure — more is not automatically better, and a therapist backing off 10% often achieves more than pushing through guarding muscles. Mild soreness for a day afterwards is normal; drink water and consider a warm shower that evening.

Frequently asked questions

Will it hurt?

It's intense in places, and tight spots can be tender under pressure. It should never be sharp or make you brace. Say so immediately if it does — pressure is adjusted for you, not the other way around.

Is deep tissue right for back pain?

For muscular back pain — stiffness, knots, posture-related tightness — it usually helps noticeably. If you have diagnosed disc problems, recent injury, or pain with numbness or tingling, check with your doctor first and tell us at booking.

Deep tissue or sports massage?

They overlap. Choose deep tissue for chronic, everyday tension; if your issue is training-related recovery, mention it and the therapist will adapt with stretching and technique work.

How sore will I be the next day?

Many people feel a mild, gym-like soreness for 24–48 hours in the areas worked, followed by a looser, lighter feeling. Intense soreness beyond two days means the pressure was too much — tell us and we'll note it for next time.

Can the therapist focus only on my back and shoulders?

Yes. A focused 60-minute back, neck and shoulder session is one of our most common requests — just say so in the booking notes.
